LORMAN, Miss. – The Owls women's soccer team had a "soft" opening to the 2018 season with an exhibition match against Alcorn State University on Sunday, Aug. 26 at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium. In its first showing against another team, The W women's soccer team took down its NCAA DI opponent 2-1.
After just a week of practice, the Owls were able to step out with a win. "This was a great first game to come out and see where we were! I'm happy for my players to come and play well," said Head Coach Gray Massey after Sunday's game. "This was a great opportunity to see what we need to work on for the next few weeks! I am happy for the result and now we will get ready for West Alabama on Thursday."
Scoring her first two unoffical goals as an Owl, Caroline Grafe led The W with goals in the first and second halfs. Showing her offensive muscle, Grafe played for 62 minutes to tally nine shots of which four were on goal. Also showing athletic promise was Isaura Camacho who had two shots on goal and Mary Catherine Hutchens with the Owls only assist.
In front of the goal, Sarah Gilliland played the entire 90 minutes for six saves and one goal allowed.
The Owls women's soccer team will play one more exhibition match before the start of the regular season. This time the Owls will take the game home to the Columbus Soccer Complex on Thursday, Aug. 30 when they host the University of West Alabama at 5 p.m. Follow the action on the Owls social media pages and show your support for your team by using the #WinEveryDay.
