MONTGOMERY, Ala. –  The Owls were unable to outlast the Hawks in Wednesday night's soccer match. Huntingdon women's soccer team scored a late second half goal to take the match 1-0 over The W. With the loss, Owls move to 0-3 on the season.

After an hour delay due to weather, Caroline Grafe, junior from Kiln, Miss., got The W offense moving with the first shot-on-goal of the game just a little over one-minute in.

The momentum shifted around the seven-minute mark and the Hawks took control of the ball with several shots in a 10-minute span.  Owls goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland stood firm in front of the goal to prevent the Hawks from scoring, keeping the game 0-0 entering halftime.

In the second half, the Owls were again able to get in scoring position before their opponent. Chelsey Walker, a junior forward, put a shot on target just three minutes into the half. The Shreveport, La. shot was stopped by the Huntingdon keeper but she was credited with her first shot-on-goal this season.

Owls defenders and keeper Gilliland worked hard defensively, but with less than five minutes left in match, the Hawks scored the game winning goal.

"We gave up a goal with 4 minutes left. I beleive that the girls battled hard and had chances," stated Head Coach Gray Massey. "I am proud of the effort and energy that we had just unlucky on the goal."

Walker led the Owls offense with two shots (one on goal). At keeper, Gilliland played all 90 minutes for six saves and one goal allowed.

As a team, The W record four shots (2 on goal) with two corner kicks. Huntingdon put up 18 shots (seven on goal) with one goal and 10 corner kicks.

The Owls will bring the game back to their home field on Saturday, Sept. 8 when they host Letourneau University. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
