COLUMBUS, Miss. – Director of Athletics Jason Trufant and The W Athletics are pleased to announce the hiring of Jack Byrd as the new head coach of the women's soccer program.
Byrd joins the Owls Athletic staff after 10 seasons at the helm of Pearl River Community College women's program. He served as assistant coach under Josh Hess for two seasons, then took over the head coaching position in 2009.
"We are so excited to add Jack Byrd to our athletic staff," said Director Trufant. "He brings years of the experience and will be a great fit for our growing program."
While at Pearl River, Byrd held a 158-34-9 record which included MACJC titles in 2009, '12, '14 and '15 plus South State titles in '09, '11, and '15. He also received MACJC Coach of the Year honors in each of the state title campaigns and Region XXIII Coach of the Year in '12, '14, and '16.
"Most two-year coaches, if they haven't coached at the four-year level always have the question as to whether they could. That's always been something in the back of my mind and this affords me the opportunity to try my hand at a four-year school," Byrd said. "I'll treat it with the competitiveness that helped me win at Pearl River Community College and hopefully we'll continue our winning ways."
Byrd is a 1999 graduate of Picayune Memorial High School. Byrd received his Associate of Arts degree from Pearl River Community College and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Ouachita Baptist University in 2003.
Byrd began his coaching career as the athletic director for the Clark County (Ark.) Boys and Girls Club, where he coached the U-17 and U-18 club soccer teams.
