COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W women's soccer team got a goal from Lizzie Truelock and then the game-winner in double-overtime from Britain Welzien to defeat Louisiana College at Sprint Mart Field in the Columbus Soccer complex Thursday evening. The Owls improve to 2-1 on the season.
In the back and forth contest, the Owls got the final word after giving up an early equalizer minutes, as Welzein scored just 24 seconds into the second overtime period.
It took several minutes to get the momentum going as Truelock, coming off the bench, scored 28 minutes into the first half. The Wildcats would even things up less than four minutes later from high ball that just barely made it in.
The two team continued in a stalemate until the end of regulation and one period of overtime before a golden goal by Welzein seconds into the second OT won the game.
In the goal, junior Sarah Gilliand moved to 2-1 on the season, playing the entire 100:26 match for three saves and one goal allowed.
The Owls will return to field on Friday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Huntsville, Ala. to take on Oakwood University. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
