COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the 2019-20 season against Freed-Hardeman University, 7-2, on the Dr. Barbara Garrett Tennis Court on the campus of Mississippi University for Women.
The Owls earned one doubles point through forfeit but was unable to pick up a set in play. Finishing first, Lions' Lisa Tatum and Skylar Sullivan defeated Sandy Bonucchi and Laura Kate Inman on an 8-0 mark. With only one other doubles match going on, Emma Potter and D'Khiyah Matthews dropped on court No. 2 next, 8-0.
Due to a second forfeit, junior newcomer Kayla King was the only Owl to claim a point for the Owls in the singles division.
The rest of The W played hard but struggled to find success across the grandstand court, as The W women's tennis team dropped five straight singles matches. Foe Emma Blackmarr defeated The W's Nicole Rensink 6-3, 6-1 on the fifth court. Next, The W's Potter dropped 6-0, 6-1 on the fourth court to Molly Murphy. In the end, Bonnucchi, Inman, and Matthews were unable to pick up points against their Freed Hardeman opponent.
The Owls start the season 0-1. The W will have months of practice before returning to the court on Friday, Feb. 7 to take on Lane College in Jackson, Tenn. The first serve is set for 5 p.m.
