COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Mississippi University for Women volleyball team picked off Southwestern Adventist University 3-1(25-8, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20) on Friday, Sept. 22 in its first match of the Owls Volleyball In8vitational. The Owls (3-11) fought hard against the Knights for a MUW victory in the first home game of the season.
The Owls found their rhythm on the home court and played one of their best games of the season. As a team, The W tallied 36 kills on 102 total attacks, 35 assists, six service aces, 58 digs, four block solos, and four block assists for 54.0 points.
Madison Lamon, freshman setter, collected a career high of 25 assist in Friday night's game. The Russellville, Ala. native worked hard for her team and was rewarded with a match high in assists. Playing in all four sets, Lamon added three kills on six attacks, one service ace, six digs, and one block assists to her season stats.
Haley McMurphey, sophomore outside hitter, led the Owls defense with a career high of 17 digs. The Caledonia, Miss. native played all four sets to collect seven kills on 18 total attacks, two assists, and three service aces.
Other stand out players in Friday's match include Megan Parks and Savannah Thomas. Both players entered late in the match but they kept the momentum going. Parks did a great job defensively when opportunities opened and Thomas gave some good relieve to Loren Schmitt who held the team offensively for most of the game.
"I am pleased with our performance tonight," said head coach Roxanne Hernandez. "With the exception of a few unforced errors that probably could've prevented that third set loss, we played at the level that we've been practicing at and came together as a team. I look forward to seeing how we fare out tomorrow."
The Owls look to repeat the feat tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 23, when they face Southern Union Community College and Bevill State Community College in day two of the Owls Invitational. The W will take on Southern Union in the first game of the day with a 10 a.m. start time.
