LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Owls volleyball team stretched it legs at the University of West Alabama Exhibition Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 25. The W participated in three scrimmage matches against host school UWA, DII opponent Tuskegee University, and DIII opponent Birmingham Southern to get a feel of its abilities before to the start of the upcoming season.
Despite coming up empty handed in the win's category, the Owls learned valuable lessons that will improve their game ahead of the season. "I thought this scrimmage was an overall great experience for returners and newcomers to finally get the chance to play together," said Head Coach Roxanne Hernandez. "Of course, we do drills and competitive style games in practice, but we definitely needed this opportunity to play high caliber team and see where we stand."
Looking forward Hernandez states, "There's still a lot of things we need to work on statistically that we did not do too well but we progressively got better over the course of the day. We have improved tremendously in some areas from last year and have a lot more depth from court to bench. I hope we can get into gear a lot quicker looking forward to next weekend at Belhaven."
The Owls will have one week to put their lessons into practice before they travel to Jackson, Miss. for the Belhaven opener weekend tournament on Friday, Aug. 31 – Saturday, Sept. 1. During the two-day tournament will play host school Belhaven University and Central Baptist College.
