Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Huntingdon in Home Opener

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls volleyball team hosted Huntingdon College on Thursday, Sept. 27 in its 2018 home opener. The W started the match strong but was unable to finish, falling 3-0 (24-26, 22-25, 9-25) to the Hawks.

The Owls played better on their home court against Huntingdon than they did on the road earlier in the season. The W saw a decrease in unforced errors and controlled the defensive side of the ball.

Offensively, sophomore outside hitter Kayla King led the Owls with 19 total attacks and five kills. Madison Lamon, sophomore setter, led the team in assist with nine and collected three service aces.

Defensively, Haley McMurphey handled the back row with a team match high of 8 digs. She also contributed four kills to the Owls scoring effort.

"We had a lot of fight in the beginning of the first two sets. There was a night and day difference between what our team brought to the table this time versus our first time seeing Huntingdon," explained Owls coach Roxanne Hernandez. "As the match went on, we lost our consistency and Huntingdon took advantage of that."

The Owls will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 28 when they host Sewanne: The University of the South. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
