Volleyball Played Close Five Set Match Against Belhaven

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls gave the Blazers all they could take in a five-set match on Tuesday night in Pohl Gymnasium. The W volleyball team (4-12) did not go down easily in the 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 11-15) loss to Belhaven University (6-7).

Junior Tori Weir and junior Sadie Mitchell controlled the ball on both sides of the game for the Owls. Weir, a middle blocker from Columbus, Miss., led the Owls offense with 11 kills on 30 total attacks. The elementary education major also picked up three digs, one service aces, one block solo, and two block assist.

Mitchell, the libero from Corinth, Miss., led the Owls defense with a match-high 16 digs. The math education major added 11 total attacks and four service aces.

Cleaning up as setter, Madison Lamon recorded 19 assists while tallying 10 digs and three service aces.

The Owls played very close to the Blazers, trailing Belhaven in kills 47-42. The W recorded more service aces 8-7 and more solo blocks 5-2.

"We should walk out with our heads held high today as this was a hard-fought match for us," said head coach Roxanne Hernandez. "A few too many communication errors got the best of us but we remained consistent in our energy and efforts. We are looking forward to the chance to pick up two home wins on Friday."

The Owls volleyball team will return to action on Friday, Sept. 27 when they take on Bevill State Community College in doubleheader action. The first serve of the first game is set for 4 p.m.
