Volleyball Goes 2-2 at Wallace State Tournament, Evans and Canada Named to All-Tournament Team

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Owls volleyball team goes 2-2 at the Wallace State Community College Exhibition tournament. In the two-day event, The W saw victories against Cleveland State Community College and Chattanooga State Community College while falling to Wallace State Community College – Selma and Walters State Community College.

The Owls defeated both Cleveland State (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20) and Chattanooga State (25-17, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14) in four sets while grabbing one set against Wallace – Selma (23-25, 25-15, 19-25, 9-25).

Freshmen Lacey Evans and Iyana Canada were named to the Wallace State All-Tournament team for their efforts. Evans led the team in digs with 26 in game one, seven in game two, 21 in game three, and 14 in game four.

"Lacey was a huge part of our defense for the team this weekend," said assistant coach Brooke Carter. "She led the team in digs in the game against Wallace-Selma and Cleveland State. She also provided stability in serve receive only having three reception errors on the weekend."

Canada was a force for The W in blocks and kills. The Oakman, Ala. native recorded one block solo and one block assist in game one, one solo in game two, three solo and two assists in game three, and one assist in game four. In kills, she recorded six in game one, four in game two, eight in game three, and seven in game four.

"Iyana did a great job this weekend putting a big defensive front at the net and finishing the weekend with five solo blocks," Coach Carter said of Canada. "She also brought great energy to the court and a powerful swing at key points during the matches."

"Overall our team as a whole struggled on Friday, but I am proud of the way we came back the second day and played our game," continued Coach Carter. "It was a mental battle that we needed to overcome and we rose to the occasion on day two."

The Owls volleyball team will return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 15 when they host Huntingdon College in the annual Dig Pink Game. The W will charge $5 admission which will be donated to the Baptist Cancer Foundation. First serve of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
